Lawsoniana also know as Lawson's Cypress and White Cedar
Lawsoniana is the strongest of the cypresses, and has significant stiffness properties. In New Zealand Lawsoniana has been used for house framing, roof trusses, weatherboards, roof shingles, interior panelling, furniture and joinery.
Lawsoniana's have a yellow-brown coloured heartwood and paler sapwood, with a fine, even texture. The timber has a natural lustre that makes it a good substitute for kauri.
The name, cedar, relates to the spicy smell of the wood, a feature common to the cypress species.
Lawsoniana is the most fragrant of the species grown in New Zealand.
Macrocarpa also known as Monterey Cypress
The timber has a low to medium density softwood (485 kg/m³ at 12% moisture content) and a large amount of heartwood, which is a golden brown honey colour and has a speckled lustre, which is rare in timber.
Macrocarpa is a moderately stiff, strong timber similar to NZ grown Douglas Fir.
Macrocarpa clears are very similar to Kauri in character, and machines and turns well owing to its fine texture.
Macrocarpa is one of the most naturally durable exotic softwoods grown in New Zealand, and is resistant to insect and borer attack in its sawn form.
Its heartwood is rated moderately durable - a 50x50 stake will last 10-15 years in the ground. Larger sections will last considerably longer. Outside and above the ground macrocarpa is equivalent to H3 pine in durability. Inside where the timber is protected from the elements, it will last virtually indefinitely.
Macrocarpa, when dry, will accept a variety of paints, oils, two pot resins, and varnishes. Macrocarpa has a fine grain and machines and sands well to give a high-quality finish.
End Uses for Macrocarpa
Pergolas, landscaping, exposed rafters and beams, T & G Panelling and sarking, flooring overlays, feature gates and fencing, slabs for kitchens & bar tops, shop fittings, signs, tables, boat building, cabinet making, wood turning and carving, fence battens, stairways and balustrades, laminating, and picture framing.
